How to Keep Your Survival Gear Ready for Cold Weather

Organizing your preparedness gear for winter involves a few different considerations. But the most important steps will help keep your gear safe from the cold. Here’s how to ensure your equipment and supplies are ready for anything.

 Make Sure Everything Is Charged and Stocked

The last thing you want during a power outage is to discover your solar generator is out of power. Especially if a winter storm is limiting sunlight.

The time to charge your generators is now. The sun is still up, and the power is still on. Double-check all of your power sources before winter. Check their charge levels. If it’s anything less than 100%, pull out the solar panels. With a day or 2 in the fall sun, they’ll be back to full power.

Along with that, you should check your emergency supply food collection. Examine the packaging. It should still be intact, and the food should be unspoiled. Do a count on how much food you have.  Keep Your Food Far From Moist Areas

Winter brings unique moisture threats. Between continued rainfall and melting snow, there’s plenty to consider. The last thing you want is water seeping into your storage area and spoiling your survival food.

Make sure your food kits aren’t stored in any areas prone to moisture in the winter. This includes your garage, attic, underneath windows, or outdoor sheds. As snow falls, these areas are warm enough to melt the first layer of snow and increase moisture. The water can leak into your home and affect your food.

Move food to an interior closet or room in your home. Somewhere dry and well-protected. For extra protection, ensure your food is in a water-tight plastic tote. Get food that comes in packaged in “disaster-resistant” packaging. That way, you have 3 layers of protection. When you open up your next survival meal, it’ll be dry and fresh.

Move Gear Away From Low Temperatures

Rugged gear can hold up to lower temperatures. But you don’t want to risk anything with sub-zero nights on the horizon. Prevent freezing for your most important equipment by guarding against low temperatures.

If your storage location isn’t insulated, it can get as cold as outside. Move your solar generators, flashlights, and lanterns into a heated, insulated space. Under your bed, in a closet, or under the stairs are great options. They’re easily accessible and not prone to freezing.

 Add Heating Solutions to Your Preparedness Plan

Before winter arrives, take some time to review your plan for a winter emergency. If a blizzard traps you indoors and you lose power, you need to stay warm. Now is the time to prepare for every scenario.

Heating solutions are a must-have. It can be a space heater to plug into your solar generator. Or you can get weatherproof matches and enough wood for your fireplace. Even just a few extra blankets can make a huge difference.
